Pina eliminated three opponents on his way to the championship match, where he defeated Dan Jarboe, 218-146. Elk Rapids junior Kate Hicks took home the runner-up trophy in the girls competition. Hicks bowled 172, 110 in the early round to advance, won three matches to reach the finals before falling to Corrie McIntosh, 172- 106. Schindler named coach of the year BY PHIL TROMBLEY SPORTS WRITER ELK RAPIDS -- Elk Rapids varsity football coach Ed Schindler received Coach of the Year honors from the Michigan High School Football Coaches Association in re-ognition of his highly successful initial year as the Elks' head man. Schindler, who led the Elks to a 6-3 record as well as the team's first ever post-season playoff berth, was one of 10 Division 5 coaches to make the association's list. "I think that Ed is very deserving of this award. To get voted by his fellow coaches is quite an honor," Elk Rapids athletic director Jim Standerfer said. "We are grateful that he's our coach at Elk Rapids, and we hope that he'll be here a long time." |
