Elk Rapids Resident Gene Barker is pulled on his Schwinn tricycle down River Street in Elk Rapids by dogs Brody, George Bailey and Bella. Wife Sandy said Gene first became interested in exercising the dogs this way when he saw a man on the Traverse City bike path being pulled on a sled by a team of huskies. Gene researched sleds on the Internet, but read one testimony about a man who was pulled by his dogs on a tricycle and he decided to order one. It arrived the day before Thanksgiving and Sandy said ever since Gene has taken the dogs out twice a day, rain or shine.
