Elk Rapids netters fall in tournament

KINGSLEY -- The Elk Rapids girls varsity volleyball team didn't come away with a win in their first non-conference tournament of the season at Kingsley on Saturday, Jan 6., but the experience gained there will hopefully help the Lady Elks for the remainder of the season.

"Overall, I really wish we could have had some wins under our belt leaving today, but I think the experience the team gained today will be advantageous to them in our next match," Elk Rapids coach Shawn Barrera- Leaf said.

In pool play, Elk Rapids fell to Bellaire (14-21, 12- 21), Buckley (17-21, 16- 21) and Kingsley (6-21, 12- 21).

Elk Rapids came out strong in bracket play and utilized a strong aggressive service game and good defensive coverage, but Traverse City Christian won it in the end by scores of 21-25, 14-25.

Kelsey Hawkins led the Lady Elks with eight digs, seven kills and three blocks for the day. Mary Stroh contributed with 15 assists and three aces; Nicole Thelen had eight kills and three blocks; Catlin Orschel had three kills, two blocks and two aces; Kaitlyn VanDeusen added three blocks, two digs and one ace; Rachel Parent was 90 percent passing with two aces and Carrie Louis served 87 percent with four aces.
