ELK RAPIDS - At 7:52 p.m. on January 22, 2008, the Elk Rapids Police Department received a report from Joanne Szymkawiak that her daughter, Anne Therese Avery, was missing from her residence located at 914 S. US-31.

According to a report from Elk Rapids Police Chief Michael Miles, Szymkawiak said that she had come to the residence to move in with her daughter. She found the rear door open slightly and assumed that Anne was in the house. There were no visible footprints leading from the house. Anne's vehicle was in the garage and her purse and personal belongings and pets are still at the residence.

Anne's son, Samuel Robert Avery, 16, passed away on Nov. 7, 2007. Elk Rapids Police Chief Michael Miles said the details of Samuel's death are still "undetermined." "It's under investigation," Miles said.

The three agencies currently working together to investigate Samuel's death, The Elk Rapids Police Department, Antrim County Sheriff's Office and Michigan State Police, are the same agencies working together to find Anne Avery, Miles said.

The agencies are investigating the possibility of foul play regarding Anne Avery's disappearance, Miles said.

"We can't rule that out because her belongings are still there," he said. Anne Avery is described as follows: Female, caucasian, date of birth: July 24, 1970, 5 feet 8 inches tall, 115 lbs., blonde hair with hazel eyes. She was last seen January 21, 2008.

Anyone having information on the whereabouts or having contact with Anne Avery on or after January 21, 2008, is asked to call the Elk Rapids Police Department at 231-264-6592 or the Antrim County Sheriff's Department at 231-533-8627.
