Smoke alarm

Three fire trucks, two police cars and several Elk Rapids Township firefighters drew the attention of passersby along River Street on Jan. 23. Township fire chief Larry Ball said the department was responding to a call at Riverside Title, at the corner of Dexter and River streets, where workers smelled smoke. Ball said that after eliminating possible sources, the smoke smell was determined to have come from a malfunctioning compressor in the building's shared basement.
