Sports PUBLISHED:
Strong defensive pressure keyed the win, said Elk Rapids coach Andy Kenney, as the Elks stayed in a tough man-to-man scheme throughout. "I told the guys that defense would win the game," he said. "We held them to under 40 points and we finished strong." Elk Rapids led by scores of 8-5 and 24-17 at the end of the first two quarters, but the Elks missed some shots from the outside and Glen Lake sank some on the inside to turn the tide in the third-quarter turnaround. Kenney said the Elks were able to break down the Glen Lake zone defense with a couple of inside baskets, and they also hit on a couple of three pointers to put together the fourth-quarter surge. The Elks, who upped their overall record to 4-6, were led on the score sheet by Garrett Gribi with 10 points, Zac Dreffs with nine, and Skyler Hindes and Brandon Isenhart with seven each. Ian Sliger contributed with six rebounds, while Hindes and Mike Hubbell pulled down four each. Sliger added three assists and four steals and Hindes added five assists. Ryan Dyksterhouse led Glen Lake with 14 points.
