The Elks also brought home a pair of silver medals as junior Maggie Petersen (24-5) placed second at 103 pounds and freshman Derek Petersen (16-17) placed second at 125 pounds. Maggie Petersen lost by pin to Traverse City St. Francis gold-medalist Jarritt Martin. Derek Petersen lost by pin to Kalkaska's Damian Donathan in his final match. Other results for Elk Rapids included Jason Benak (4th, 119), Jared Benak (3rd, 130), Kevin Shugart (4th, 135), Zach Drogowski (3rd, 145), Tyler Shananaquet (4th ,171) and Jeff Steinbeck (3rd, 285). "The Elks wrestlers showed up to settle some scores today, and they did just that," Elk Rapids coach Rob Petersen said. "We've given away some recent duals with losses in key weight classes. Today we turned the tables on a number of those wrestlers and gave notice that Elk Rapids wrestling is ready for post-season competition." Grayling's team won Saturday's team title with 150 points followed by Kalkaska (144), Traverse City St. Francis (107), Elk Rapids (82.5), Charlevoix (52) and Boyne City (47). In the overall conference race, which combined tournament results with regular season results, Kalkaska finished first followed by Grayling, Traverse City St. Francis, Charlevoix, Elk Rapids and Boyne City.

"We've let some matches slip away from us over the past two or three weeks, and we needed a good solid showing to rebuild some confidence." Elk Rapids hosts Charlevoix on Thursday, Feb. 8. The Elks compete at the team districts in Kalkaska on Thursday, Feb. 15, and wrestle at the individual districts at Standish Sterling on Saturday, Feb. 17. |
