Charlevoix's cheer team tallied 451.3 points to take first place at the Lake Michigan Conference competitive cheer competition. Grayling (442.0) was runner-up at the third conference outing of the season while Kalkaska (427.8) finished third, East Jordan (369.1) was fourth and Elk Rapids (366.2) was fifth.

"They did well in all of their rounds," Elk Rapids coach Kim Willis said of her team. "I was really happy with round three, especially considering the rearranging we had to do."

She said the "rearranging" involved the loss of three team members, one of whom left the team and two who faced ineligibility issues. Word came the night before the competition and some stunts had to be rethought, she added.

"I was really proud of Courtney Goltz, who was a baser tonight," Willis added after the competition. "Typically she is a backspot."

A baser is a girl who supports or holds another girl up in the air, and a backspot is someone who stands guard in case of a fall, she said.

Round by round, the Lady Elks put together scores of 102.5, 71.7 and 192.0.
