"It has been an honor for me to represent the board of education, teachers, students community and you as Elk Rapids High School principal. I would like to thank all involved for giving me the opportunity over the past 20 years to grow as a professional and to thank you personally, Jon (Hoover) for helping me grow as a person. I will certainly miss the students and the wonderful high school staff, yet I believe in my heart this is the right thing to do for all concerned and the right time to do it." A large group of students were able to show appreciation for Gallagher during the meeting's Principal Recognition Month presentation. He and Sunrise Academy Principal Jim Standerfer were each presented with commemorative pens and gift certificates. In his board notes and comments, Superintenedent Jon Hoover shared his thoughts on the resignation as an action item. "This is a request I would be very happy for you to take no action on or simply refuse to accept it," Hoover wrote to the board. "Losing Steve is going to be very difficult on this district, let alone the high school. This is a huge loss." During the meeting, Hoover commended Gallagher for his strength and leadership during some recent difficult times for students and the district. Also requesting resignation for the purpose of retirement effective the end of the 2007-08 school year, is music instructor Jim Forbes. The board also approved his resignation at the meeting.
