Grant funds well for Milton Twp. Park

KEWADIN -- A grant recently received by Milton Township will put a township park one project closer to completion.

During the Feb. 12 Milton Township Board of Trustees regular meeting, township Supervisor Lon Bargy announced that a $3,000 grant from the Great Lakes Energy People Fund will be used to install a variable speed well at the Milton Township Park off Indian Road. The well will handle the irrigation systems for the soccer and little league fields there and "will allow the fields to be kept in excellent playing condition," according to Bargy.

He said Wednesday that the existing well couldn't handle the irrigation system, which was installed during an earlier phase of the park project, and wasn't suitable for drinking water.

While there are still projects left to complete the park, the well puts the township closer to that goal.

"We'll work on that as we always have -- a little at a time," Bargy said.

A bathroom and concession stand at the park was finished this fall using a Department of Natural Resources grant, and it will be fully open this spring, he added. The bathrooms will be open daily, and the concession stand will be open during events like little league games.

Ball fields at the park have been completed through grants from the Grand Traverse Band of Ottawa and Chippewa Indians, Rotary Charities and more than $45,000 in donated labor and materials. In addition to the ball fields, the Milton Township Park includes recreational areas for soccer, tennis, basketball, skateboarding and a beach area along Elk Lake.

Prior to the project, the closest public ball fields were in Williamsburg.
