Grayling ends Elks' volleyball postseason

PETOSKEY -- Strong net play from Nicole Thelen and defense from Kelsey Hawkins wasn't enough for the Elk Rapids volleyball team to overcome Grayling at the Petoskey district Saturday.

Thelen finished with six kills and Hawkins had 12 blocks for the Elks, who pushed Grayling in the first two games.

"We played well against the Vikings, especially in the second game," Elk Rapids coach Shawn Barrera-Leaf said. "Kelsey had a great game digging up hits from Grayling. Nicole played the net aggressively and forced the opponent to layoff some hits, which allowed us to take control of the ball."

The Vikings won the first game 25-18 and were pushed to 27-25 in the second game before closing the match with a 25-13 game.

"We were unable to perform at the serving line, which caused us to lose too many points," Barrera-Leaf said. "We handed them over to Grayling."

Olivia Morrison had 16 assists for the Elks, and Lidia Dart had four aces.
