ELK RAPIDS -The Antrim County Sheriff's Office is currently investigating an accident of two snowmobiles that went through the ice in Elk River near Elk Rapids at approximately 9:25 p.m. on March 9. Elk Rapids Fire and EMS responded to the scene along with sheriff's deputies, and pulled a female subject out of the water. A short time later, a male subject came to shore on the opposite side of the river.
The to subjects were transported to Munson Medical Center, where the female subject was listed in critical condition and the male subject was in serious condition. Sheriff Terry Johnson said that both subjects are lucky to be alive, with the extreme cold and ice conditions. The male subject was released from the hospital on Monday, March 10. Alcohol is believed to be a contributing factor in the incident. The investigation continues.
