Miss Elk Rapids '07 bids farewell

ELK RAPIDS - Franki Price said she learned a lot during her reign as Miss Elk Rapids 2007, including the importance of having a great attitude and a willingness to serve.

As part of her farewell, Price shared some of her Miss Elk Rapids experiences with The Town Meeting. She also offered some advice to newly crowned Miss Elk Rapids, Jenna Hubbell.

Pageant preparation can be hard work and isn't always as fun as it sounds, Price explained. Tasks like shopping for a casual modeling outfit can seem exciting at first, but can be tiring, she added. Contestants are required to do casual wear modeling and prepared speaking, formal wear modeling with impromptu speaking and display talent in the creative and performing arts. In the end, Price said all the hard work pays off.

The crowd at the 2007 Miss Elk Rapids Pageant was charmed when the junior, dressed as a shoe shiner, danced to Johnny Cash's "Get Rhythm." She was able to again showcase her dancing abilities at the 2008 "Masquerade Magic" pageant on March 22, performing in the open number, which she choreographed.

"I loved being on stage and entertaining, and of course winning was the cherry on top," Price recalled of the 2007 pageant.

Price's reign involved a lot of travel throughout northern Michigan. She attended the Miss Michigan Pageant where current Miss America Kirsten Haglund was crowned and also went to Mackinac Island for the Lilac Festival. There, she appeared in a parade with her court atop a horse-drawn carriage. At one parade in Charlevoix a clown jumped up on the Miss Elk Rapids float and rode with them for a while, which the court found comical, she said.

Humor was one quality Price said she learned to value in herself throughout the experience. She was able to gain confidence in the process too. Getting up in front of a large crowd, Price served as an emcee at the Miss Elk Rapids 2008 Pageant.

"I overcame my fear of speaking in front of a large audience," Price said. "And of course there were plenty of times when I wasn't very sure of myself, but if I just throw myself out there, the results are usually positive."

Hubbell can look forward to a year of good times and her willingness to cheerfully accept her duties will uplift everyone, Price said.

"(For) the new Miss Elk Rapids, the beautiful and talented Jenna Hubbell, there will be plenty of times when she's going to think, 'Oh my goodness, I have to go to another parade?' or 'Not another Evening on River Street!' but I urge her to keep a positive attitude and do everything at full tilt," Price said. "It is Miss Elk Rapids' attitude that has the biggest influence on whether or not the rest of the court has a good time and ultimately on how good of a job they do representing our town."
