She then turned to the middle distance and won the 800-meter run in a time of 2:38.5. The Elks also three other first place finishes, but couldn't overtake either of their two league rivals. Elk Rapids ended the meet with 34 points, with East Jordan taking first place with 60.5 and Kalkaska second with 59.5. Sydney Vandeveer picked up a first place finish in the 3200-meter run with a time of 14:15.3. Kelly VanDeusen was first in the long jump with a leap of 14 feet 5 inches, while the 400-meter relay team of Samantha Amrhein, Austin Blackmore, Emily Gretel and VanDeusen took first in a time of 56.6 seconds. Another highlight of the meet was the three first places taken by East Jordan's Ashley Skrocki. Skrocki won the 100-meter high hurdles in a time of 16.6 seconds, the 200-meter dash with a time of 28.4 seconds and the 300-meter low hurdles in a time of 50.8 seconds. The highlight of the boys meet for Elk Rapids was Charlie Hoch setting a school record with a first place high jump of 6 feet 3 inches. It eclipsed the old school record of 5 feet 10 inches that had stood since 1988. "What is so amazing about it is Charlie didn't start high jumping until (last) Monday," boys coach Luke Johnson said. "Literally the sky is the limit for him." Hoch also won the shot put with a throw of 42 feet 1 1/4 inches, while Andy Mach picked up a first in the 400-meter dash in a time of 57.9 seconds. The 3200-meter relay team of Mach, Jim Janisse, Thomas Lucas and Ryan Sundberg won in a time of 9:35.3. Elk Rapids won the 400-meter relay as the team of Luis Cruz, Charles Curtis, Alex Bethke and Zach Drogowski in a time of 47.7 seconds. Cruz, Hoch, Mach and Drogowski teamed up to win the 800-meter relay in a time of 1:40.5. Jeff Xavier finished second in the 300-meter intermediate hurdles with a time of 46.9 seconds. Raudel Gomez also had a second in the discus with a throw of 116 feet. Nicolaj Elnef and Ignacio Sire tied at 14 feet 9 inches in the long jump. Elnef got second place and Sire third. Lucas Clark finished second in the 400-meter dash with a time of 1:06.1, with Wolfgang Ziemba was third in 1:14.2. Drogowski picked up a second place in the 200-meter dash with a time of 24.7 seconds. Curtis was third in 25.1 seconds. Hoch won the high jump at the Ken Bell Invitational last Friday with a leap of 6 feet. He finished fifth in the shot put with a personal record throw of 43 feet 5 inches. The Elks also got an eighth place in the 1600-meter relay with the team of Lucas, Sundberg, Cruz and Mach. "It was a long, wet day but our kids stayed focused and competed to the best of their abilities," Johnson said. "It was fun to see them really focused and ready to compete. Now we get a few days off." VanDeusen had a fifth place finish in the long jump with a leap of 15 feet 6 inches at the invitational. She was running relays and didn't make it back in time to get any more than one jump. "Under those circumstances, to place fifth in this meet with this competition is quite an accomplishment," girls coach Brian Keilen said. "There were girls from East Kentwood, one of the largest high schools in the state, at the meet so Kelly did a really good job. "Usually it takes a couple of jumps to get the right feel, so if she would have had more time she could have moved up in the standings." Hammer was fourth in the 1600 meters with a time of 5:23.4 and seventh in the 800 meters in 2:32.3. "It was Amanda's best 1600 time this season," Keilen said. "She was paced by some good competition from two Traverse City Central girls and Devyn Ramsey of Benzie Central. "It's meets like this that get her ready for what she'll see at the regional and state meets. She's heading in the right direction, and hopefully her times will keep dropping." Elk Rapids was scheduled to compete at Suttons Bay today (Thursday). |
